96 Johnson 200 oceanrunner-RPM gauge

after about a 30 minute ride at 4000rpm or so, my check engine lite came on and the alarm sounded, I stopped checked everything I could think of, the boat was running fine, I restarted and continued on, about 15 minutes later, same thing, I headed back to shore and noticed my rpm gauge was barely working (reading about 1200rpm and fluctuating) but the boat was running fine at about 3000rpm. My question is, how do I check this out? Where does the gauge hook into the motor? I have read a manual but it is not listed anywhere, is the alarm/check engine lite related to gauge malfunction? Or? HELP

page 7-30 of mine has info for jet drive. I have read this thing cover to cover and cant find a thing, help

Page 7-30 of the OMC service manual, not the Clymer or Seloc.

You are asking a very involved question.

If you examine the back of the tach, you will see an 8 pin plug with purple, black, grey, and a bunch of tan wires with colored stripes. Those tan wires are the sensor wires that tell the Systems Check gauge which fault has triggered an alarm.
If you are completely accurate in your description, the "check engine" light means you have a fuel restriction. Look for clogged filters, bad primer bulb, or bad anti-siphon valve in tank. The usual culprits.

The tach fluctuating is a different issue. A bad reg/rect will cause tach to fluctuate or read zero.

You need to get the OMC manual for 1996 200. It is invaluable.

Good. You can start with the possible fuel restriction, tho. Look for collapsing primer bulb, remove fuel tank filler top (fully vent tank), things like that. See if the problem goes away. It will be a problem to re-create your issue without being on the water at 4000 rpms though.
Keep posting on your progress.

One other thing. You asked where the connection to the engine was made...
Take off the plastic electrical panel cover on the lower port rear side and you will see a few Deutsch style rectangular plugs. The one with all the tan wires going in it is where the connection to the engine is made.
Each tan wire has a specific defined fault that it signals. The plain tan (no stripe), for instance, is for overheat. I am not sure of the other tan/striped definitions, but the book is!!!

I really appreciate the help. I am in Beaufort, S.C., dark here now but will check the primer bulb after work tomorrow, the good part is that I live about 2 minutes from the landing at Parris Island and can be on the water to check it out very quickly. I'll keep bugging you for more info as you seem to know your stuff! Thanks again
