What are the idle settings on a 96 Johnson 48? Also what is the proper idle RPM? Just bought the boat and it has been sitting for a couple years. Seems to run pretty good except for the fact that it does not like to idle. Any other ideas on what I should check, clean on the engine?? THANKS!

I believe that engine has fixed idle jets, no adjustments. You need to replace the impellor, check the lower unit for water intrusion, clean and check the entire fuel system for leaks and old, bad hoses, and tear down and overhaul the carbs. Run double oil for the first tank of gas too.

Idle speed setting is 850 - 900 rpm in gear in water. If that model has idle mix screws ,which I believe it does, lightly seat them clockwise and back them out at 2 1/2 turns open initially and fine tune after a water test.

If that engine set out of use for 2 years ,I highly recommend that the carbs be dismantled and thoroughly cleaned of any gummy restrictions that almost always occur on one that has set out of use for that length of time that the carbs weren't completely drained and devoid of old gas and two cylcle oil. This procedure is cheap insurance against a lean condition cylinder meltdown.

You'll need an engine specific manual to perform this carburetor cleaning procedure if you plan on doing it yourself.Good luck.
