I was changing lower unit oil, and found small amounts of metal on the two magnetized drain plugs. What is an excessive amount of metal? I also noticed that when it is full of oil and I spin the prop it does not sound smooth, but has a slight gear sound to it. It is a Johnson 200 venom. Could the lower unit be going out,or gone?

chill2971
If it doesn't feel smooth, there is a problem, question is how much of a problem? In round numbers, spin the pinion in the housing add $1000,
run 'til she blows, total complete gearcase $3000.
Let a good mechanic pull it down while the case is good (?) and replace the parts that are sheading metal and other parts (bearings, ect.) that are suspect, $200+- plus parts (pinion bearing?+?). Have you hit something and damaged a prop recently? Many times a fractured gear tooth will show up later on when it finally lets go as a result impact. My view.
Backfire
