I was out in the lake this weekend, and with no notice or alarm the engine just stopped, checking further, the starter would not turn over the engine. Oil resivoir was full. A mechanic pulled the oil pump cover and linkage and found ground up plastic/fiber inside. Is this a known problem? Any recalls? What has likely happened to my engine? Should I rebuild? or get a new power head? Can I bypass the oil injection and go back to at 50:1 mix in the gas? Thanks.

Run a Compression check and pull the head to see if there is any scuffing of the clylinder walls. And yes, you can do away with the oil injection. Sounds like a fluke to me that your injector went south. they are usually very reliable. The only way to know why it locked up is to do the above and hope for the best!

Oil gear failure is a common problem on Mercury V-6 outboards. A company called Marine Solutions has an Electronic Oil Injection system. Check them out at 262-524-0804
