I have a 1996 Mercury 115 with oil injection. How reliable is the injection system? I suspect that mine may be going out, and have a Toledo Bend trip coming up. with no time to have it checked out, can I just pre-mix and run double oil (if it's working), just to be safe till I can get it checked out?

They are very reliable. Why do you think it's going out?

Re: '96 Mercury 115 Oil Injection

On two trips last year, after long runs back to the landing, on throttling down, I heard the warning horn beeping. After shutting down and re-starting, no horn. I figured maybe an overheating problem, so I changed the impeller. Next trip, everything OK. Then, after sitting for the winter, I took it out. After a long run, the motor sounded funny idling. Kind of like something rubbing. Now I'm paranoid about the oil injection. I just want to add oil to the gas tank, mark the oil tank level, and see if the oil tank level changes. I just want to make sure I won't hurt anything by running double oil, till I can get this sound diagnosed.

Nothing wrong with the double oil. It's what engines break in on,and todays motors have more than enough spark to burn it.
DHP

just another 2 cents worth; todays synthetic oils call for 100:1 mix instead of 50:1, you could premix with synthetic @ 100:1 for peace of mind and cut you oil consumtion by 1/3.

"CAUTION", All synthetic outboard oils are NOT to be mixed at 100:1, as a matter of fact there is only one that is reccomended at that ratio that I know of and it is not TC-W3 certified, allthough a great oil. 50:1 is the reccomended ratio for the others.

1986mariner150:

Be carefull what you post here on the forum unless you are sure of what you say, as someone may take what you say as gospell and ruin an engine.

Yeah, that's what I thought about the double oil. Just wanted other opinions. I was a little worried because a lot of people go to the trouble of completely removing the oil injection system when it seems that they could just leave it in place with an empty oil resevior, and pre-mix. I guess maybe if the system isn't working, then it's a drag on the engine?
