I've got a 96 Johnson OceanPro, It has been about five months since I last run it so I was going to start it up today just to run some fresh gas through it. Primed it, Turned battery on and turned key for about 10 sec and noticed thick white smoke comming from the top. Quickly turned key and battery off and pulled the cover off and it continued to have thick white smoke from the top for a couple of min. By the time I got the plastic covers off the top no more smoke and was not even warm to the touch. it did have a heavy burnt electrical smell to it. Any suggestions on where to start with this?

I bet you burnt up your rectifier-regulator..

mine went bad a few weeks ago on the same style motor....my battery stopped getting a charge, and my tach didnt work any more, but other wise my motor ran fine.

the dark material the wires feed into was melting around where the wires entered...telling me something iside got hot and fried..

i replaced that part and everything works fine...

that part is sealed to the motor with a gasket, because underneath it is water cooled..

I wont say that is definately your problem, but take a look and see if you dark plastic-hardened resin on top of the rectifier is melted at all..

it sits right under the covers you spoke of.

Yup, it's all soft and sticky around the wires, where did you get your replacement from and how much did it set you back?
