After changing the seals for the trim rams, I assumed the tilt ram seal would be no problem. My Yamaha service manual shows no breakdown of the piston. I dont see how this piston comes apart to replace the seal. Does anyone have any experience with these seal replacements?

You sure its a Vmax engine(20") don't show a 96 OX Vmax 250 that year.

Either way you need to get a piston sub assembly for the tilt cyinder. Only way they sell it. $390 retail on that. Part number 61A-43810-00-00.

The cowl says V-x 76 salt Water series II. She is a 96 carburated 250 with I believe a 30" shaft.
