My 97 Johnson is having sudden jerks forward when in forward gear. It doesn't happen in reverse though. At the same time it makes a humming sound. Again, only in forward gear. I haven't tried opening it up, I think I might just be better off purchasing a used lower unit. My enginer is a V4 but with a V6 lower unit. Any thoughts what would be the cheapest way to go? If anyone knows of a used lower unit that would fit my unit, let me know.

Re: 97 130hp Lower Unit Problems

I do know this much having had 2 1996 johnsons, 130hpV4 and a 150 hpV6 apart for water pumps at the same time that the driveshafts are 1 inch different in lenght. If memory serves the V6 was about 18.5 inchs and the V4 was right around 19.5. So unless you change out the drivshaft I don't think you can just bolt up a v6 gearcase. You may be able to bolt up a v4 L/U but I believe the prop shaft is different so you would also need a new prop or re-hub your's. If it were mine I would take it to my friendly wrench and have him take the big nut lose for me and maybe if he wasn't swamped pull the carrier and see whats up in there. It may be as simple as a clutch dog or a bearing. I redid a L/U on a v6 merc myself for under 3 bills including new gear set, bearings, impeller, and replaced all seals and orings. Was easy enough but I did have to get the spanner nut removed, and tightend back up by a pro due to not having the special tool myself.

Your lower unit is a V6 "style" unit. There are differences. However, a V6 unit will bolt up. You will have to use your shift rod.

If it were mine, I'd simply rebuild that one. A forward gear set should take care of it although I'm at a loss to explain the humming is.

Good luck!

I took it to my mechanic and though he didn't have a used unit, he offered to swap my 130HP for a 96 140HP Suzuki at no cost. Is it an even swamp or I am I being taken for a ride?
