I've got a 97 40HP Merc Force that I have been trying to nail down a miss at idle for a good while.

It starts and runs easy, just randomly spits and sputters.

I checked my trigger with a multimeter and it showed 35Mohm. I can't find for sure what mine is supposed to be because I don't have a manual.. and there doesn't seem to be a corresponding line to my SN over at CDI either. (My SN is 0E274281)
Some show 800 - 1400 Ohm, another shows open.

I also tested the stator and it checked at 753Ohm, which from what I understand should be 500 - 700Ohm.. That's pretty close though.

Does anyone know what the trigger on mine should check at?

I am also struggling to keep the carb from overfilling on this beast.. I pulled it apart and cleaned it, replaced the needle and adjusted the float, and replaced the bowl gaskets.. it still pukes out the top after sitting a while.

The replacement needle I ordered per the mercury part number was solid stainless whereas the original was rubber-tipped. I am guessing my seat is just worn enough that the solid needle won't seal. So now the hunt begins for a rubber needle. I don't run ethanol fuel, so it shouldn't ever be an issue.

If the needles not deformed?? it should be ok.
Still puking? then adjust the float again.

Sputtering in the video sounds like the air screws set wrong or the reeds are the problem.

The air screw set at 1 1/2 turn and adjust from there.
In the water in gear motor warm.
Set at 1 1/2 and let motor run for 10 seconds.
Then turn the screw in 1/8th a turn, let run for 10-15 seconds to burn the fuel at the old setting.
Repeat this until the motor stumbles, stutters or dies.
Then back out 1/2 turn.
You might have to make small adjustments either out or back in.

The reeds: pull the carb and look at the reeds, broken/missing?

Thanks for the info, I am desperate to get this thing to seal so I am also going to replace the plastic fuel inlet elbow with a brass one.

Any idea what sealant they used on the threads? It appears to be orange'ish-red. The parts list shows 2 different types of loctite as well as rtv but none say specifically they are used for fuel.
