Hey all:
I recently gave my boat and engine a thrashing coming across heavy seas. Sometime during, the trim motor failed and at the dock and the engine wouldn't trim up or down, but I could hear the trim relays clicking. I did some troubleshooting with these results:
- meter reads 12V going into the relays
- meter reads 12V after the relays. Trim switch is also functional.
- I didn't see any fuse/breaker in between the relays and the trim motor, so it looks like the motor is getting current.

In theory, the trim motor should run directly off of 12V, correct? I bypassed the relays and ran direct current into the trim motor to see if there were any signs of life. Still nothing.

On the attached pics and you can see where the back of the trim motor has a bad spot of corrosion at the top near the leads. There was no visible corrosion inside the motor; it actually looked pretty good. Where the ground meets the transom bracket, there is substantial corrosion. I know its bad, unfortunately I got it this way.

My questions are - could the issue be as simple as it isn't grounded correctly, or does it sound like the motor is bad? Any kind of additional testing I can do?
thanks,

It's possible one of the magnets could be cracked in the trim motor housing say if it were struck by a hammer or the like, if so it won't work and would have to be replaced.
The corrosion your referring to is supposed to be that way it's a sacraficial annode that eats away so that your engine bracket and engine doesn't! Should put a new one on ocassionally as it get's down to about 50 percent wear!
Good Luck! max!

If you ground out the case against the neg post and put the leads against the pos post and nothing happens then the motor is toast!!!
Put 1 lead to pos the other to neg.nothing happens then it's toast.Jerry
