97 Honda BF40 - Shift Rod Connection

As I was heading up stream this afternoon I noticed my impeller was not pushing out a very strong pee stream. I shut the motor down and turned it back on and it was pushing more water but would not shift into gear (forward or reverse). I ended up getting a tow back. when I got back I noticed a couple threaded rods and what I think is the water cooling line. One of the rods has 2 nuts on it and the other was just hanging there threaded into nothing. I played around with the nut on one of them and got the motor to shift into gear (forward & reverse).

I would like to know how these rods are supposed to be set and why one of them is dangling and threaded into nothing.

I think these are 2 rods that make up the shift rod & have become disconnected.

I think the threaded rod hanging there needs to be threaded into the upper nut (longer nut) on the other shaft. this is only an assumption and confirmation would be greatly appreciated.

You could start by letting us know what brand and model engine you have....so to place thread in proper brand forum.

I don't know this motor at all, but one thing I'd do - with the unit disconnected as in the photo, move the shift lever or the remote shifter (whatever it has) and see what upper rod moves; that'd obviously be the one to attach to the lower shift rod. On my much smaller Honda, the output tube of the impeller is pretty obvious, and the input pipe up to the head is also pretty obvious. Neither has any threads - the output tube fits into a plastic adapter on the upper tube.

I think upper shift rod A (number 15) is the threaded rod hanging down that needs to be connected to the lower shift rod (number 10).

I think I need to spin the joint (number 11) off the lower rod and thread it all the way on the upper rod, then spin the joint down onto the lower rod until it meets the hex nut (number 39), connecting the 2.

Hopefully I can push the lower rod down enough (with propper alignment) to get the joint off the lower rod.

Problem solved with the following procedure.

"First thing to do is to put the gear case in reverse. You will need a needle nose pliers....turn the prop by hand as you pry the lower shift rod down. The prop should finally lock in gear.

Then remove the upper nut (longer nut) from the lower shift rod.

Once removed, then screw it onto the upper shift rod. Note that there should be a mark on the nut indicating "up". Screw this on until the lower part of the nut if above the end of the lower shift rod.

Now rotate the lower nut so that the top of the nut is about .3 inches from the top of the shift rod.

Make sure that the shift lever is also now in reverse. You may have to screw the upper nut up a little so that it does not push down against the lower shift rod.

Once all the above is in place...screw the top nut down onto the lower shift rod. Do not allow the lower nut to move. Screw the top nut down until it touches the bottom nut. Then tighten the two nuts together.

Check you shifting. Have someone rotate the prop as you shift (so you do not break any of the plastic linkages)."
