97 mariner runs better when you trim?

I have a 97 150 mariner that when im driving and hit the trim button the tach begins to work and the motor runs better. It also has a rough idle hope some one can help.

Check the connectors on the rect/reg on rear of engine, if burnt or melted they will loose connection and cause stator voltage problems.
