Just bought a 97 maxum 2 days ago. i was cleaning her up today and noticed the tank (plastic) has a sticker on it. So, I wipe the sticker to get a better look.
The sticker says (among other things) "date of manufacture 9/24/86".

how is it I have a 97 boat with an 86 tank!?!

IT HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED...I AM SMART ENOUGH TO DETERMINE THAT THE FLOOR HAS NEVER BEEN CUT TO REPLACE IT.

So, how did that happen!? Normal?

Maybe the tank just sat new on the shelf a few years before actually being used?

I am thinking new old stock. I just took the tank out of boat today. My boat is a 95 and the tank says 93.

Is it typed on or just hand written, if hand written could just be that they wrote 86 instead of 96, or it could be a typo. Or they could have gotten a good deal on a bunch of really old tanks. That would tork me off if that is the case.

What does it matter? It's plastic, it isn't going to rust or corrode. I am not surprised that Brunswick would have 11 year old tanks laying around.

no it isn't handwritten it is printed on the label. Weird.....that would be some very old new stock.

And isn't it true that attic tanks can permeate vapor without leaking fuel?

Here's 3 possible explanations

1. Since Bayliners and Maxums are the same, and they sell a lot of boats, Brunswich ordered a "million" of those tanks and it just took 11 years to use them.

2. Brunswick bought a bunch of those tanks in 86, but then changed the boats just enough that they didn't fit, so they sat. Then, years later, they changed the boat alittle, those tanks would fit, so they used them.

3. The supplier built a "million" of those tanks, expecting MANY manufacturers to use them. They didn't and they sat for years.

If that detail bothers you own a motor home with a Chevy/Ford/Dodge based chassis under it and you learned the engine/tranny was one year or more older than the body itself. Motorhome manufacturers place orders for chassis for their units well in advance of the time they actually find their way into production. The fuel tank situation is not unusual and should be of no concern. In this day of "just-in-time" manufacturing processes this is less of an issue but years ago, that's the way it had to be done.

And Sea Ray

Sea ray is made by Brunswick also, of course. But as far as I know, NONE of their hulls/decks are shared, like Maxum and Bayliner are. So there is no comparison between Sea Ray and Maxum/Bayliner.

Hull yes. But most other parts are used between the product lines

If your hull was made on or after 9/24/96, I would say the most likely explanation is it's a typo, and should say "96".
