Hi all. I definetly have a bad connection to the check engine system inside the tach unit on this 1997 Oceanpro 150 HP, it now stays on with the engine off. I checked for continuity between the sending unit in and the ground at the gauge connector and it showed open, but the check engine light comes on as soon as the gauge is reconnected to power(connector plugged back in). Is this a sealed unit, does anyone work on them, and what are my choices for finding a new one. I've looked around the internet and havn't seen anything yet with the four warning lights built in. Any and all help appreciated.
I also didn't realize you can't rev up above 1500 RPM, can someone tell me what the potential damage is from that. And is that only neutral or in gear on the hose as well??
Thanks all responses appreciated and welcome,
Don T :)

If the guage stays on with the key off, then you have a voltage leakage problem thru the key switch. If a lite stays on with the motor not running and the key ON, with that particular sensor disconnected, then the gauge is faulty and has to be replaced or there is a short on the particular tan/striped sensor wire. The factory service manual has the diagrams.

by the way, there is nothing to stop the motor from revving higher than 1500 rpm in neutral.

The gauge is off with the key off. When the key is on, it goes through the self test and then the check engine comes back on. A week ago I was trying to find the problem and tapping on the gauge made the light go on and off. Now it is just on. If the vacuum switch is active, what would I expect to see on an ohm meter from sensor to gauge to gauge ground. I thought it would be open in normal and closed to ground if the sensor were activated. I am showing open from the sensor in(tan/orange wire)to the ground(black) at the connector to the gauge. Same reading I get from the other sensors. And when I plug back into the gauge, I get power to the check engine light, but it doesn't look like it's coming from the sensor from what I can see. And I did check the VRO, steady 2" vacuum at most ranges. I was wondering if I'm right and how to get a new gauge or get this on fixed.
On the revving above 1500 rpm out of the water, I've heard people mention it is a no no, and was wondering why, and if the same appliesto revving up in and out of gear on a hose connection.
And THANKYOU for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it.
Its a beautiful California Day,
And I'm doing honey do's
Thanks for any replies,
Don T :)

Sorry about the lousy typing(fat fingers  ). I failed to mention, the part about testing the gauge is with key on and engine off. And I checked the purple to black and have 12v at the gauge connector.
Don T

Now that was the information that we needed. You diagnosed the whole problem. Too bad that you have to buy a new gauge, or find a good used one somewhere.

Thanks,
I really appreciate you guys who take the time to help so many folks like me. Any ideas on where to find a gauge besides the dealer, or is that about it ?????
Thanks again,
Don T
