I need to drop the lower unit on a 1997 Suzuki DT140. Does the shift rod disconnect at the lower unit, or does it disconnect at the top (under the engine)? I have a repair manual, but it has no info on disconnecting the shift rod.
Thanks

Surprising the manual doesn't cover the shift rod, anyway...

There is a 10mm bolt that holds a plastic cover on the leading edge of the lower unit. Remove the bolt and cover.

Inside you will find the shift rod. There is a tiny cotter pin that holds the shift pin in place. Remove the cotter pin and shift pin. It may help to move the shifter to position the shift shaft to the best location for pin removal.

Remove 9 - 14mm bolts and the unit will be free. Hopefully it will come off easy enough and the water pump bolts won't be frozen or break assuming that is what you are doing.

Good luck.
