I purchased a 97 Regal that has the 3.0 Volvo Penta motor. It was ran to point of overheating and then sat for a number of months with water in it. I recently had the motor and heads fully rebuilt. I purchased new manifold and new riser, rebuilt carb, replaced starter and various other components. When i took boat out on water it would run for 20-30 minutes fantastic and then with no warning sputter and die. It then wouldn't start back up until 30 minutes or more, later. I thought I either had a bad pickup, ignition module or bad coil. The pick up coil when removed was definitely looking bad, you could see it had overheated. I replaced each of these starting with the coil and eventually replaced all three and had no spark at all and boat wouldn't start. I figured I had to have gotten a bad ignition module, (I ordered the parts online). I went to local parts store and purchased a Delco ignition module and boat started right up after installation; ran great on trailer in neutral. I took boat out yesterday and it was running very bad under load. I fiddled with timing and got it running pretty good. This is when problems started. After running a few miles at 3-4000 rpm the boat sputtered and died, (same symptoms as before). The breaker under ignition key also tripped and I could not reset it for period of time. After a few minutes i was able to push in breaker and boat started right up. Again, after a few minutes, same problem. Could there be a problem in wiring harness? The first time in water the coil and ignition module were definitely working. Could there be a short that caused both of these to go bad? I would think it's unusual for both of these to fail at same time? The timing seems very touchy too. Manual says to put at 0 degrees but if i do this it will almost stall out when applying throttle and will run bad.
