my buddy just bought a 97 boat with a volvo penta 3.0 and it has a cap threaded on where the dipstick goes, no dipstick. Is this normal on some...?

The dipstick tube doesn't go straight down , it makes a big curve and runs toward the back of the motor.... can't find any serial numbers

the top of dipstick tubes are normally threaded to allow you to do an oil change (you suck the oil up from the bottom of the pan thru the dipstick tube on marine motors)

the dipsticks on marine motors go to the bottom of the oil pan.

Yea, but this one has a cap threaded on it, no dipstick... most 3.0,s i have seen the dipstick tube goes straight down into the oil pan. This tube is in the correct location to start but has a bend and goes to the back of the engine

I found this on ebay, they call it an oil drain tube, its exactly what we have

So is there a dipstick located somewhere else that I'm not seeing or is it used thru that port....I'm really confused at this point

Don't know which 3.0 you have but there should be dipstick elsewhere on the block
