98 225 tilt ram seal leaking

Hi, I have a 98 EFI-225 and I have noticed a little bit of oil around one of the tilt rams? I have a shop manual and it had nothing on changing the ram seals. How are these replaced?

tilt ram or trim ram. procedures differ.

Trim ram. The two one the sides.

you will need the tool to remove the trim caps, remove the wire seal reatiner,if used, remove the seal and the shaft oring,if used. replace the cap oring, seal and shaft oring and reinstall torqueing the cap to spec. memory says its about 80ftlbs.<br /> you can see the parts list on the yamaha parts website.

Thanks so much for your help. I order a spanner wrench that is 1 1/2 in c-c hope it fits ?<br />But its been in salt water and I know it going to be a hard to get the caps off? <br />What about the position of the rams when removing the caps and will I have to refill the fluid or bleed it system?

I usually leave the rams extended, fluid loss will be minimal, and when your done cycle the system a few times and check the resevoir with the unit in the full up position. make sure the motor is securly locked in the up position before getting your fingers in there.

Thanks, let you know when I get the wrench. I had read that you my have to heat the caps to get them off is that ok to do?

in my area oxy/acetylene is a basic hand tool.<br /> I sometimes use a piece of PVC pipe to fit between the swivel housing and the tool to let the engine rest on the pipe and hold the tool in place while I break it loose.

All I have is a propane tourch ? Is the fluid just regular dot 3 brake fluid?<br /><br />Let you know my out come next week.<br /><br />Thanks again for all.......

its dexronIII atf, propane isnt hot enough try the pipe trick,a 1/2 bar and tap the cap while holding pressure on it.<br /> the key is DO NOT let the tool jump out of the holes.

Ok< well got the Spanner wrench today and the 1 1/2 cc size is correct but the pins are to big and will not fit into the screw cap! Wow ....where can I get the correect tool?????<br /><br />maybe its just better if I take the trim unit off and let the dealer do the repair.
