here goes guys. 98 5.7 GSI. just the other day i went out to start getting the boat ready for use, after i reconnected the batteries, and changed the fuel filter it would just crank...but will fire with starter fluid, the boat has fresh good gas, oil/filter and fuel filters were changed before storage. boat would typically never take longer than 2 seconds to fire up... with my process of elimination the fuel pump turns on when i turn ignition, but when i pulled my new fuel filter off it wasnt full? low pressure pump maybe? my pickup tube is not clogged either. thanks guys

Does the high pressure pump run or just the low pressure. You need to get a fuel pressure gauge to test.

sounds like just the high pressure at the rear of the motor. so both pumps should run at the turn of ignition?

Yes, both pumps have to run. The low pressure pump is what gives the high pressure pump something to pump.

What's the full model number of the engine, the letters after the GSi?

ok its 5.7GSIPBYCCE is there a way to bench test the pump by just pulling it, hooking up fuel and 12v?

No, not really. When you do pressure tests on the engine, your are testing the engines complete system, not just the pump. No spark and low battery will also tell the ECM not to turn on fuel pumps while the engine is cranking.

Oh also, Don, in your experience what plugs and wires do you reccomend?, platinum tips or plain old coppers? im going to change them tommorrow along with the cap.

Find out what works, and what doesn't.
With the key off, disconnect the low pressure pump and turn the key on. Does the high pressure pump run for 2 seconds? If so, disconnect the hi press pump and reconnect the low. Try it again, does the low pressure pump work?
They both may make noise, but do they pump anything? That is where the pressure gauges come in.

high pressure runs..low pressure doesnt and the relay just clicks.

Do you have voltage to the pump for those two seconds?

To test for voltage at the pump you need a multimeter.

Set it to the DC voltage setting in the 20v range.

Take the two probes from the multimeter and touch them on the two wires going to the pump somehow. If there is a connector you may be able to stick them into the back. Be careful not to damage anything.

Or you could use two very fine sewing needles and pierce each wire with one. Then you can take the reading from these. Be sure to cover up the pin holes with sealant when you are done.

You can get some alligator clips from radioshack to put on the ends of the probes if you are working alone. Then you could just attach the clips to the wires and go hit the key.

If you hook them up backwards you will get a negative sign in front of the value. No worries, just disregard the negative sign and use the absolute value, or switch the probes around.

If there is voltage present you will see around 12 volts on the display.
