I was out fishing and hit 4 or 5 spots and shut down the engine each time. Called it a day, started engine and drove to the ramp. When I shut down the engine there was a humming sound coming from engine, I disconnected the battery cables and the noise stopped. When I tried to reattach them the starter engaged, without the key or in any gear. This is the first time this happened, any ideas would be appreciated.

:welcome: Eyedude to iboats. Nice for you to join us...

Oh yes the starter running without the key turned. You have either a stuck starter solenoid, OR a bad ignition switch. If you have a meter and know how to use it, check to see if there is voltage on the small terminal on the starter solenoid. If so, you have a bad ignition switch. If not, you have a stuck starter solenoid and even if you can hit it and unstick it, it is time to replace! Because it will do it again when maybe not the best time. So shop for a new starter solenoid and happy boating...

Thx for responding gm280. Wouldn't I have to connect to the battery to do these test, if I do the starter will engage.
