98' Johnson 150 Throttle/Shift Linkage Problem

I have a 1998 21' Wellcraft with a 1998 Johnson 150 Ocean Runner.

Shifting into Reverse is smooth. From there, I can get a little acceleration, but to get anything more than that, it takes a strong pull on the shift lever. Now, hang on, because you have too much speed. Nothing in between, too little or too much. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Dave

Too much or too little in reverse only or in forward too?

Most likely there is a problem in the control box itself. There was a revision on the shift lockout lever on the early control boxes. Might be some of your problem if the lever hasn't been replaced. You would have to open up the box to see.

EDIT: GO BUCKEYES!! Sorry...couldn't resist... :)

Thanks for the responses. Spoke with a Johnson mechanic yesterday and his response was the same as OBJ's. He feels the cables were inserted in the wrong holes in the control box.

OBJ - How the Buckeyes doing?
