Good News: I boat a 1998 20" Whaler Outrage

Engine: 98 Johnson 175 ocean runner ficht
Model #j175fsxecs, serial #g04500671

Bad News: Engine Temperature exceeds 210 degrees in open throttle. The engine idles at 160 degrees. When I bring the engine to 3500/4000 rpms in neutral the temp drops to 155 degrees. Under pressure the temp rises dramaticaly and drops dramaticaly.

I have put in new plugs,Temp sensor and Temp gauge. Water pisses out of the pee hole. I put 160degree temp chalk on the head and it does not appeared to have glazed. I can touch the engine without getting burned after it has been shut down for a minute.

The engine appears to run fine and I want to fish but I am afraid I'm gonna damage the motor.
What next?
Thanks

If the water pump is in good shape and you are running in salt water, you may have built up some scale in the cooling system. Try using SaltAway to clear it and you may get rid of the problem. web page

Usually the kind of symptoms you described. The impeller weakens over time and needs replacement. A lot of fellows here replace them once a year.

they have upgraded that water pump kit since 1998.
just for ffi engines.check the thermostat seats, to make sure thermostats are not getting stuck on them.make sure you do not have anything under boat bottom that make air pass by gearcase water screens..

Re: 98 Johnson Ocean Runner Ficht

I'm back several months later...same problem.

My boat mechanic said that my motor is the best Johnson ever made....???????

He replaced the impeller and plate. Said although the gauge reads 220 it is really running at 160. Well I have been using it trouble free and then wammo. Overheated today! Can it be the thermostat? or is there thermostats? I'm fairly mechanical minded, can I do this myself and where are they located?
Any help would be appreciated, the season is slipping by

Changing the impeller and plate is not necessarily the complete job. The factory water pump kits have been re-designed over the past few years and aftermarket kits are not as good as the factory's. You also need to be sure you have the correct kit as they are different and will have different water pressures between the 20" and 25-30" shaft motors. If yours is a 25" "split line" gearcase, use the 5001595 complete water pump kit. IF you use the 5001594 kit for the 20" shaft motors, your engine will overheat.

Make sure you do not have transducers, pitot tubes, or thru hull fittings within 14" of the propeller centerline.

Re: 98 Johnson Ocean Runner Ficht

ok, two more questions

1. How do I determine if I have a 20" or 25-30" shaft motor? Is it fairly easy to change the entire water pump with the new kit?

2. When I idle at the dock the engine runs at 160 degrees, when I run at 1500 - 2000 rpms the temp drops below 140 degrees. When I ramp it up above 2000 degrees the temp shoots to about 170-180 degrees. This indicates to me that something is obstructing the water flow to the pump. I know the previous owner had just put on new electronics. Am I right in my thinking and should pull the boat to check the location of the transducer and speed wheel in relation to the prop center line or does this indicate some other problem?
Thanks again

The above results where after I changed the thermostats. So I have seen improvment but still not 100% yet.
