hello all. need help figuring out issues with my mariner. first of all it does'nt do it all the time.can go few trips with no problem.then on other trips can do it couple times or ten times.its when i go to start taking off and i got throttle at full throttle it won't go over about 2000rpm.sometimes i put in neutral and turn motor off then back on and problems gone.sometimes i do everything like wiggleing all harness connections tapping on all sensors and still messing up.then finally after constantly full throttleing it and back to neutral it takes off like normal.when doing this had someone squeezing gas bulb and no difference so dont think it fuel.i have the repair manual and checked the stator , spark boxes, trigger and tps and all check out good.i was wondering if it could be my detonation module or idle stabilizer? need advice. thanks in advance. ted

No but a crack in map sensor hose will give you fits as will a sticky tps. Check tps with a analog meter and you should see a smooth sweep of needle.

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

The map sensor is built into the ECU and hose connects on nipple below TPS. What is the TPS set at? Should be .250 with temp leads disconnected. What the fuel pressure when it acts up? A failing/clogged pump can cause this as failing pressure regulator. Problems like this is why I like Brucato's unit as it has no TPS, you can add fuel to top end so your not limited to .015 pistons, and adjust midrange.

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

i havent checked fuel pressure. thought it wouldnt be fuel only because when it acts up ill have buddy back there squeezing primer bulb and acts no different.even tried choking it.but will check pressure and have gauge on boat for when it acts up ill check it.im going to check hose on map sensor too.ill post when i do.thanks again. another quick question. wondering about disconnecting detonation module and idle stabilizer. just read few post on doing it. what you think about doing this or should i just leave them both alone.thanks a bunch

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

Pumping the bulb just fills the VST tank where electric fuel pump is ,it will not effect injectors and engine does not have a choke so pushing in on key is dead effort. Leave everything alone and test fuel pressure and TPS setting. If you can make it act up on trailer you can test the det module with timing lite.

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

hello all. ok got 36 pounds on hose and when acting up in water still has 36 pounds. checked tps couple times and everything checks out good.what a nitemare took me messing around 30 minutes with it before it would go over 2300 rpm so i could go home with family from out on islands.i tapped on everything and wiggled everything with no change.when got home checked stator output test and stator resistance test everything checked good again.one wierd thing is that even tho wouldn't go over 2300rpm in foward i threw it in reverse few times and everything was good in reverse all the way to 4000rpm would instantly throw in foward and still only 2300rpm. finally after doing everything full throttle again and after few surges went to 5200rpm and on i went.felt it surging few times but corrected itself.got to launch and tied it up and when trailer was ready tring to load it up it was already doing it again no power to pull it up.please anybody help.im lost for more ideas.thanks in advance ted

Cadet,
I have been suffering with the exact same problem on my motor for 3 years - motor is identical to yours. I am so tired and fed up with it I am strongly considering spending 21K for a new 4 stroke Yamaha. I had everything checked as you did and it still acts up. New timing boxes, stator, > $1500 worth of shop work for what? Faztbullet obviously knows his stuffabout these motors. I have to check if the things he mentioned have been checked. When the motor runs, it runs great. It is pushing a 21' Cape Horn. Please keep me informed, if possible on my email scott@solutionengineeringplus.com. Good Luck!

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

Remove the airbox cover and look to see if there is an accumulation of oil in the bottom, if so, clean it out and flush the map sensor hose to be certain that it is clear.

Remove the airbox cover
Please dont try this as as you will unbolt the fuel housing, their is no airbox cover on EFI.....

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

Just wondering if anyone has had any luck? I have had this same problem for 3 years also with a 1995 200hp merc efi black max. I've had a new stator, switchboxes, plugs, ect. Checked the map sensor hose, seemed good. If anyone figured it out would really help. I've been thru 5 shops, no one can fix it.

I too have the same issue. Its a shame hardly anyone posts the fixes after they are repaired. So many open ended posts. So was it fixed anyone? If so what was the issue?

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

UNBELIEVEABLE all... After about 7 months of thinking i fixed my bogging issues from disconnecting idle stabilizer and warning system it still BOGGING! For 7 months hasn't bogg down. Week ago after hanging out at the sand bar when started to go home initially when tring to take off bogged down for about a minute then opened up and ran good. Made few stops on way home and talked to few buddies on different boats and when taking off after talking no issues. Today was going back out to sand bar and first time i throttled up ran fine and did for 5 minutes till i got to a no wake zone. 10 minutes after idling in no wake zone and was in the clear tried throttling up and just bogged down. 15 minutes of throttling up and back to neutral and making sure primer bulb was tight and also turning motor off then back on and nothing seemed to work still bogging. Then all of a sudden when full throttling it, it opened up and ran fine. But ran it for about 20 minutes stright at about 4000 rpm and then went to neutral to holla at a buddy for a minute then tried to take off and started bogging again. After few minutes did open up and went to sand bar. After sitting on sand bar like 5 hours on the way home motor did the same bogging issues bad like it did on our way out. Man i am lost on these BOGGING ISSUES!!! Anybody got any ideas? Thought about sending my injectors off to get cleaned and checked out. Help a brotha out. thanks in advance

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

There is one thing I didn't see mentioned that has caused some nightmares. There is a filter attached to tha bottom of tha electric pump in tha vst. It has to be clean along with tha vst tank itself...........Injector cleaning with new o-rings may not be a bad thing either.

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

Yeah i cleaned that final filter in the bottom of vst. A year ago i also soaked injectors in seafoam for 3 days and replacedo rings but was wondering if i should have them pro cleaned by someone? i'm just lost on what to do next?? i've done about everything already.

Re: 98 mariner 200 efi bogging down

Take a spark plug wrench along, as soon as it bogs, kill it and pull the plugs for inspection.

Aged plug can foul at low throttle and misfire, bog when the throttle opens, til the plugs burn off , then all seems fine till you idle again.

I second the opinion that it is time to send your injectors in to Tony and Linda Brucado for cleaning. A dirty injector that leaks can cause excessive low throttle fuel and load up the spark plugs.

A heavy dose of SeaFoam in the fuel 'may' improve the condition, but nothing beats a complete cleaning.
