2 months ago I bought a 98 Procraft 170 w/125 Merc 2 stroke, carb. Low hours and taken care of. It did spend some time sitting but was winterized every winter.I really think the original owner took care of it. So far up to now everything was ok. About a week ago while running wide open the motor seemed to stumble or lose power for a second or two then it recovered. Well today after idling thru a no wake zone I went to accelerate and the motor would not rev above 2000 rpm and seemed to have a bad miss. Motor would idle fine but absolutly no acceleration, couldn't even get it up thge trailer. I'm aware that this motor has the 2+2 system but it seem to be engaging when trying to accelerate. Original owner told me to pump the bulb before first start till it was solid, well since I have owned it the bulb would get tight but never solid. While squeezing it you could feel it leaking down. Found fuel leak and fixed it but when pumping bulb after repair it would get tighter than before but it still doesn't get solid and it sounds like fuel it possibly squirting into a carb while squeezing bulb. Also the bulb doesn't stay "hard" during the day. I'm wondering if there might be a float sticking open? Have not performed any checks yet but engine has new plugs and I ran fuel cleaner last week. Pulled the plugs after getting home and they seemed clean but was wet with fuel. Are there any appearent or common problems with this motor? I've been told this is a good motor. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Lets check the compression and spark. It is possible that you lost the high side of the stator and that will limit you to around 2000Rpm.

TMD
