'98 Merc Mountaineer door dissassemble

The lock on the left front door will not release from the outside without several (10-15) tries, even with the key. I would like to remove the inside door panel to see what is hanging up. Does the inside panel come off in 1 or 2 sections? How is the panel released? Any idea on what to look for after the panel is removed?

2 ..remove door handle screws ...then remove handle trim ...release push clips starting at bottom of panel to the top then lift up panel to remove panel from track by window

Thanks dolluper, It worked just as you described.

(Found a small broken spring in the latch mechanism but I could not figure how to get the latch out of the door.)
