Hi

I have a 98 sea ray with a 5.0 merc alpha 1 gen 2.

The engine is the original, but it has v belts instead of the serp.

Is this wierd?

I believe your year is about the last of the "V" belts, but the marine engines have always been behind the automotive when it comes to up grading. Also it's not uncommon to have an engine that was produced the year before the boat was.

:welcome: to iboats

Agree with wrench, I would prefer serp but all my boats have v-belts. You probably have the original motor but if you want to make sure pass us the engine casting number and we can check. It should be a number like this 10243878

Edit: Or could give us the Mercruiser engine serial number and we could look up the as-built configuration

Only problem with the serpentine setup is when your belt goes you lose everything. You can limp home with no alternator belt.

I prefer V belts when diagnosing what's making "that noise" by loosening one at a time until the noise stops which then allows me to continue boating in peace.

With any belt,I just sprinkle water on em till the noise go's away. Easy way to find the problem area.

you can,t be serious gents ! my parents 5.0 mpi has a serpentine belt with automatic tightener and the belt is a non issue at any time , my Volvo 3.0 GS V belts loosen , squeak, wear and tear out and need regular maintanance ... ( i know - i have a little bit rusty pulleys ).

I was just inserting a little humor, but V belts or serpentine all the same to me. My V belts don't loosen up, don't always need adjustment. Serpentine belts are fine too just gotta listen to those idler pulleys
