My 98 vmax always dies when I slowly put it in gear (forward). I always have to "hammer" it in gear a little to keep it from dieing. This is starting to get annoying, what is the problem? thanks.

p.s- I obviously dont know to much about the mechanical part of motors so please explain to me as if I was a 10 year old what is wrong with it. All I know is how to drive it.

Not much to go on here. Well, lets see, it could be the idle setting on the motor. You did not say how many hours, but it is possible that the idle setting is low, so putting it into gear at low idle is putting too much load on the motor, so it cuts off. When you increas the power rapidly, the extra power compinates for the low idle. You may also wish to check for problems with the prop, binding due to hidden obstruction.

If you did not learn anything today, you should have stayed in bed.

hello
dont baby this into gear. shift firmly and quickly. theis engine has a shift cut out switch that may be triggering to long if you are moving the leaver to slowly. Major problem I see everyday is people trying to move the shift lever very slowly and I can hear the clutch dog grinding at the gear dogs.they made seveal horsepower configs of this motor but if yours is fuel injected I would look for a misadjusted or sticking cut out swith. and make sure your shifts are crisp and clean. dont try to ease it into gear
good luck and keep us posted
