Please Help, I am an aviator and not boat savvy. I purchased a 1987 bayliner capri. The original v4 engine was replaced with a 305 truck engine. When I purchased the boat I installed a "new" omc 305. The out drive was rebuilt. First time in water, it had a heavy thumping while crusing. Then while pulling into the slip, I put the throttle in neutral and then into reverse. The boat went forward and hit the dock. "Embarassing" The lower shift cable was replaced and adjusted. Out of the water, it seemed to shift fine. The big day, I took my wife out on an excursion, to easy her mind from the money I have spent on this boat. Well, as faith would have it. We left the dock and started to cruise and thing went bad. The boat was not shifting. I had to shut it off and swim, pulling the heavy boat behind. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO GET THE WIFE OFF MY BACK repair this things once and for all.

Adjusting the shift out of the water should be fine.If they used the right tools.
No idea if it was done right.Take it back to whoever you had do it.Ask them to try again.
Then if they don't use adjustment tools, they did it wrong the first time.
If my memory is right. The way OMC set it up you need a tool on the transom and the cable inside the boat.

There is also a measurement tool for the shift shaft on the lower.
