I have a 99'sugarsand tango w/ a 175 XR2 mercury sportjet. The steering cable runs right next to the exhaust port. The steering cable casing melts within one hour of operation and obviously effects the steering. The engine doesn't seem to be overheating (no overheat alarm or poor running). The shop I bring it to is clueless as am I. I'm on the third steering cable. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I would relocate, or cover cable with heat shield and look for different shop. You probley can find something for heat shield at one of the discount auto parts store,

I'd like to hear from anyone that has had a problem or has any knowledge about the Mercury sport jet 175 melting steering cables.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.. My steering cable melted through also. Was wondering if there are any tricks to replacing it. I have a 2001 175 sportjet. It looks like i have to pull the power head to get the cable fed through the not so straight through run. Any1 have some suggestions?
