What do I do to start tracing the problem? Is there a fuse? How to I test trigger wire for a signal? Ran fine and just stopped working one day, nothing out of the ordinary I can think of that caused it. Motor is a '99 40 HP Merc. Anybody know what color the signal wire is? I haven't climbed under the dash yet, just trying to get an idea of what to look for or test besides the obvious loose connection on the back of the gauge. Any other you Tracker owners run into this issue? Thanks for any help or insight.

No fuse involved. This could indicate a problem with the stator. Check for proper charging voltage to the battery. The usual wire color for the tach signal is dark gray.

Yikes. It's been not working since last summer. It has been real hard to find info for repairing it. I hope it is not something serious, I use the boat year round just about every day and have not noticed an issue with it charging. Can you please advise me on the procedure to inspect or shoot me in the right direction? Is there a way to check for a signal at the wire going to the tach itself?

Thanks.

Start by checking for those loose connections, then for continuity in the tach signal wire. Disconnect both ends first.

Thank you. I will do that this weekend and report back.

I have continuity in the gray wire. And I read 12 volts engine running, nothing engine off.

You shouldn't be getting 12V from the tach signal wire. Are you sure it's connected to the correct terminal at the motor?

It's the only gray wire running from the harness into the engine and looks like it goes to the voltage regulator.

I got some pics of all this stuff. I'll throw them up next day or two and see if it helps.

Those burnt connectors are a red flag.

Yes, the 2 connectors from the stator burned up at the connectors, and they were zip tied right against all the other connectors. My motor was trying to charge 3 batteries and I have since repaired the 2 burned connectors and just have one battery charging off the motor. It seems fine now and is charging fine, I just need to figure out this tach problem.

It may be charging but the tach signal may be messed up from the damage. But before running out and replacing stuff, hopefully someone with better knowledge of how the stator and rectifier supply the tach signal.
