99 evinrude ficht 225 starting trouble

still having a problem trying to start this motor. it cranks overy very slowly now....have replaced the batteries (today) and checked/cleaned all connections twice now. i only get 9v at the solenoid when cranking. the cable from the batteries to the solenoid is almsot brand new so i dont think this is causing the problem? is there anything else that could be causing this drop in voltage when cranking?

Sure, crappy wires. You've clearly got a high resistance somewhere with the 9v deal. Have you checked the power grounds ... they are every bit as important as the 12v+ lines. The other possibilities are problem with the starter motor itself (high resistance thru the brushes, etc.) or high resistance internal in the solenoid. Have you tried using a heavy wire to jump around the solenoid?

You need an OEM shop manual, which you don't seem to have.

yes, i did check all the ground wires as well and i actually replaced the solenoid...so i dont think theres resistance there...but i do have a spare starter for that motor so i guess it wouldn't hurt to try it out...didn't think that would cause drop in voltage when cranking....

replaced starter with spare from my parts motor.....cranked like it should and started instantly.

I am having the same problem (9V at the starter) and have replace batteries, all of the cables and the solenoid. Did your problem stay solved after putting the used stater in, Tyler??
