I just picked up a used pontoon with a 99 Force 40Hp. PO gave me the original paper work for the motor which matches the actual motor. Model Number shows H-040412VD. When I look this up on parts websites it shows it as an EL not an ELPT. Which would indicate no Power Trim.

But there is definently a trim system on it. Owner said it came with it. He also siad he only used it when going up to the shore to lift the motor. System looks to be OEM not an aftermarket or anything. Could this have been added at the Original dealer? Or maybe even the boat Manufacturer (Fisher).

Re: 99 Force tilt trim?

It is SO easy to add power tilt/trim to these engines that it could have been done by anyone. They use the single ram Mercury system with the motor and pump mounted between the transom clamps. Two heavy pins hold the whole assembly. Incidentally, the mercury parts are almost identical. I recently swapped a Force 70 trim unit into a Mercury 40. The only difference was the mounting pin holes were a larger diameter and the motor was a 3 wire. It went in slick as snot.

Re: 99 Force tilt trim?

I think the '99 40Hp uses a different system from most other single ram trims. Sometime around 1996 mercury released a smaller 25-50HP trim with a less expensive motor design and streamlined check valve design. They are a good system except for the trim spool bypass spring. It compresses with age and cause the system to fall under weight of engine.

In generational terms I describe these as 1996-2008 30-50HP Mercury, Mariner, and Force single ram trim system.

Re: 99 Force tilt trim?

I raised the motor yesterday and it went up fine and stayed up all day. lowered it back down last night.
The system looks just like the one I added to my Johnson 48 spl. I built my own relay box so installation was pretty simple.

i found the relays on the Force they are mounted in the back, port corner of the lower cowling, correct?
