Hi I followed previouse posts and solved that the stiff power steering is from a real tight steering cable becasue it is disconnected from the power steering and the cable end is still really hard to turn under no load at all.... Sounds like some real gummy grease and a 45 degree day.

My question is how can i clean it or get solvent in there to break it down. How do they come apart becasue behind the wheel is a rack and pinion.

Thanks for the help!!!!

You are all the best any help is greatly appreciated...

Did you unscrew the cable nut from the power steering to check it? Many time the cable freezes in the aluminum tube thru the PS unit.

to the previous post I did completely remove it from the ps unit and so I definately know it is the cable....

Understandable.... Where is the cheapest place to get a new one.... I have plenty of time so anything that is the cheapest....

Also what causes these to fail or is it a periodic thing to fix...

Thanks for all the help everyone....

Did you just unscrew the cable attaching nut (1-1/16" wrench size I think) where the cable attaches to the PS unit. (where it says steering cable in my previous picture)
Get that nut all the way off the treads and see if the steering turns ok. For your discription, I still think you are coming to the wrong conclusion about the cable being bad for that year boat.

If it actually is the cable, excessivly tight bends are the biggest problem. It causes grooves to wear inside the cable causing it to bind.

Yes I had the end completely pulled out of the ps unit and the steering wheel still turned hard so it is bad i guess.... well off to replace it. Does anyone know where the cheapest place to replace it and also the ruff cost.

Thanks again
