99 glastron gs 205 flywheel swap 5.o

I have a 99 mercruiser 5.0 and i need to replace the flywheel can i use a regular automotive or do i need an oe replacement also does anybody have an idea what a shop would charge to do this.Thanks for your help.

Why do you need a flywheel???? Is it missing?
If just teeth missing off the ring gear, that ring gear can be replaced, you don't need the whole flywheel.

Impossible to say. All depends on access for removing the engine.

theres 2 teeth missing on it and the starter wont engage if it stops in that one spot i took off the starter and looked at the flywheel 100% sure i need a new flywheel

also i dont think the engine will have to be removed theres enough room to change it if the outdrive is pulled off

You do have to pull the engine. The flywheel cover has to come off, along with the coupler and the flywheel.
The ring gear can be replaced but the flywheel has to be off the engine to do it.

Ayuh,...

The Actual Part you need, a new Ring Gear is about $30./ $50. at your local Napa...
But,..
As noted by Don,...
The drive has to come Off, the Motor has to come Out,+ Then the Ring Gear can be replaced on the old flywheel...

I see what youre saying now after talking to a buddy i didnt know you could replace the outer ring on a flywheel thought i had to buy a new one.Thanks for youre help.
