A/C thermostat / controller issue

I have a Cruisair System with what I guess is the SMX II wall mounted controller. This weekend it started acting funny - it kept climbing all the way back up to 99. You could use the down arrow to lower the set temperature, but as soon as you let off it climbs right back up. I am assuming something is wrong in the panel itself? Will spraying it out with contact cleaner hurt it any more? Are there any other options if I need to replace it? $245 for a thermostat just seems ridiculous!

Take the cover off of the controller and check the rubber buttons and the plastic tabs inside. It sounds as though the button may just be stuck down.

un plug it, remove any battery, pull it apart, inspect for anything amiss, and clean contacts with a damp paper towel .... make sure it is completely dry before reassembly
