1st question: I want to replace the 3/8 inch steel fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb. Is there a reason the original one has so many bends and twists in it other than to conform it to the shape of the engine to save space.. reason I ask is I have tons of room under the motor box and could run the line 4 or 5 inchs away from the motor and not have to put but 3 easy bends in it..
2nd question: someone gave me a 7.5 hp honda last year that didn't run... well it does now.. anyway I want to use it for a kicker(its a 4 stroke) and was wondering if I could use the 2nd outlet port on my fuel filter housing on my merc for the fuel supply hose? Oh, this is a 21 ft. chris with a 350 chebby I/O.. 1980 vintage...thanks folks..

flashback, you could run the line as far out as needed, the only reasons the original is so close is to save room and it looks better that close. For the kicker supply you could use the #2 port on the filter, but, if there is a problem with the main fuel supply the kicker won't have any fuel either. A small properly mounted aux tank would probably be the safest back up available, unless you only plan on trolling with the kicker. Best of luck with the replacement line and buy a tube bender for a buck, its worth it to avoid kinks.

I could be wrong, but I think if you use that second outlet on your filter housing you need to install shutoff valves on each of the lines feeding each motor.
This is to prevent the motor your running from just draining the fuel from the other motors carbs.
Good luck.

Knotaddicted, I didn't want to "clutter" things up with an aux fuel tank but you have a good point about the possibility of the main tank getting contaminated..I may need to re-think this. :) :) Thats why I posted it on this web site lots of knowledge here..
Canuck, I had thought about that, I don't think there would be a problem running the main engine if the fuel line on the outboard were dis- connected, but the other way around I don't know.. would the outboard pull fuel thru the main engine's fuel pump?

Yes, I believe it would until it ran out of fuel, then pulled air.
I think you need the shutoff valves.

I agree with Canuck. Unless the filter housing has automatic check valves, which is a little unlikely, you will need manual or automatic shut-offs. I can understand not wanting to clutter things up, sometimes there is just enough room for the minimums, let alone the extras!

Flashback
There is a 2 way (or 3 way)valve you can get at the marina store.Turn the handle, and the pointer goes to the open fuel line. Done it, like it. Be happy, enjoy life, boat lots. Batavier

Does you outboard have a Primer Blub in it's line ???
There's 2 Check Valves right there,.. 1 coming into it,+ 1 going out............

Is your Main Motors Fuel Pump, Up stream, or Down stream from your Filter ??????
That Fuel Pump Also has 2 Check Valves in it........

Still Won't Cure a Contaminated Fuel Issue though.............

Re: a couple of fuel line questions....

Hi Bondo, I think you answered my question about the main engine fuel pump haveing check valves. yep the pump is down stream from the filter and my outboard has a primer bulb.. so all I should need to do is run a length of steel fuel line off the extra filter outlet far enough to get it out of the engine box, then connect the rubber fuel line to it... check valves in the fuel pump and bulb should prevent any back flow. It should work until I figure out if I want a seperate fuel supply for the outboard..Thanks all :D :D
