Hi. I want to first say thanks for all of the great info on this board!

I have a 1998 Crownline 210CCR with a 5.0 liter Mercruiser I/O Alpha I Gen II Outdrive.

I noticed a couple of things when getting her going after laying up for the Winter and wanted to ask you more knowledgeable folks...

When cranking over there was a loud screaching sound. I stopped cranking and then turned the key again and she started fairly easily. The sreaching noise (only way I can describe it) seems to happen more often when cold but is there from time to tome when turning the key to crank her. Any ideas??

She idles very well at around 700 rpm and revs well while in idle but stalls when I try to go in forward or reverse. From reading here it sounds like a need a new shift cable. Does that sound right??

Last thing...for now. There is a little bit of water coming out of what looks like a weep hole on top of the housing just aft of the circulating pump pulley. Is that normal and I just didn't notice it before? It isn't much water and the only way I really noticed it is that there is a little mist that gets slung as the water drips.

Thanks in advance for any help ya'll can offer!

Don

Hi!
#1 & 3 Are most likely related....Sounds like the bearings/bushings on your water pump are shot...
Iwould say that it needs to be replaced.....
Disconnect the belt before trying to start & see if the noise is gone....
#2 New cable most likely....Oil the pivot points on shift assy first, see if that helps.....JK

Leaking out the weep hole is not normal. Leaking in general is not normal. If something is leaking, it needs fixed.
That leak could be slinging water into something else causeing it to lock up when cold and having not turned for a while. Could be an idler pulley, alternators do that also.
Next time you go to start it cold (After it sits for a while) have someone crank the engine and you have a look and see what is NOT turning. That sreaching noise is the belt SLIDING over the pulley. When you stop cranking the engine may turn backwards just a fraction of a turn which frees up what ever was locked up.

Regarding the shift cable, yea, change it. It's at about that age.

I Agree on the Shift Cable,....... And the Waterpump..........

I'm Wondering about the "sreaching noise (only way I can describe it)",...............
To me a belt is a Squeal,.....

When you do the Test that Don explains,.....
If the Screeching is coming form the Back of the motor,.......

You'll be needing a New Starter to go with the Shift Cable Kit,+ the Waterpump.................. ;)

Thanks for the benefit of your experience guys.

Bondo, you are right about the screach vs. squeal. The thing that kind of bugs me is I bought the boat last Spring and a new starter had just been installed on it. Is there someway it can be misaligned to cause this?

Thanks again,

Don

Nope,.......Unless the Bolts have Loosened,+ the Starter is starting to Fall Off.......

The Bendix drive is a Part Of the Starter,.....
It may have gotten abit of Corrosion on it,.. causing it to Hang Up,......

It's Possible it could be taken off,+ Cleaned,+ Lubed........
But,.. Usually it's just the Beginning of the End..........
