Could a guy get away with using synthetic ATF in the upper drive housing on a '69 OMC sterndrive? I have some extra laying around from the last time I changed my explorer's fluid, so I thought perhaps this stuff might just fit a purpose elsewhere!

Thanks

All I know is my 94's outdrive takes some thick gear oil specifically for that purpose. I don't think ATF would have enough viscosity.

As always, you should use a product that (at least) meets the specs defined for your use.

Marine environment and running conditions calls for different properties in many respects and thinking of the consequenses ($$$) a few bux saved could turn out to be your worst decision ever.

This goes for fluids, parts and all.

find and read a owners manaul, you may be very sorry if you don't use the correct oil. the old omc units where a very finiky unit and as they are made no longer don't chance it with syn. oil
