a few questions about my trailer

hey, i just boat my first boat a few weeks ago...a 1970 12' valco. it came with a 1957 P.O.S. trailer. I have a few questions about it so i am hoping someone on here could help me out...

1. i just do not trust the coupler that i have on my trailer. it is one that you turn to lock down instead of just having a trigger. does anyone know of a place to buy a kit that will mod it from the old turn system to a trigger?

2. the "rims" on my trailer very rusted and the tires are rotting. there are no hubs on my trailer, the rim houses my bearings and acts as the hub. since i need to spend the money to replace the rims and tires i figure i might as well get some hubs and some tires that are a little bigger. i have 1in axles so what size hubs do i need? do i want them to be 1/16th of an inch bigger???

i am not a mechanics so your help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: a few questions about my trailer

I am not sure what you are refering to concerning the coupler. Also, without a picture of the wheels, I am a bit lost in that department as well.

Although, there is a possiblity that you will not find hubs for that axle. Might be best to replace the axle (hubs included) along with a new set of wheels and tires...

Re: a few questions about my trailer

That "Hitch" its called should work fine as long as its in serviceable condition. Those dont have a chance of popping open. I just sold a racecar trailer a few years ago that had one of those on it, and it was built in 1958. I kinda miss it.
As to the hubs (no hubs), got me. Need a pic. But you can go to tractor supply or a trailer place and get newer axles and parts so they are make in this century at least.
