My cousin has a Merc inboard carbed 6 cylinder engine. Would like to know : When engine is cold, say next day morning cold start. Should the choke butterfly be found at complete closed position and start to open fully while choke coil heats up, right ? How many minutes should pass to begin closing itself when engine has been shut ? Asking this nonsense because it seems that electric choke coil is not working or coil was asembled badly and rear coil triger is not engaging shaft butterfly.

Sea Rider, usually electric chokes use a piece of metal that gets hot and expands slowly as it heats up from a voltage flowing through it. So the amount of time can usually be set by loosening up the screws holding the choke assembly together. There should be am arrow indicating more time or less. If not then it is a fixed setup using the metal to heat up. And once power is removed, that metal cools off fairly quickly to close the choke again. But as for the amount of time, that could be any length determined by the factory setup. But even with an electric choke, there is usually an override mechanical setup to help open the carb as well. So if the electric choke doesn't seem to be working, it should still work enough to allow you to get back to the dock somewhat. And you can easily determine if the choke is working by feeling the assembly to see if it gets warm. If it doesn't the metal spring-like ribbon inside is either broken or not getting any voltage through it,,, Hope that helps a little...

You know I am not sure that once the choke is fully open it closes down until "reset". Try this: in the morning, don't touch the control and remove the flame arrester, and take a look. If the choke is closed, there you have your answer. If the choke is open, push the control to WOT F and back to neutral and see if it closes (if it is open it should close). Then start it up and watch it open.

Ok, thank you both. One issue, if butterfly is cold open, if moving it with finger L & R sideways, should there be a small resitance on the butterfly shaft as to feel it's engaged onto coil spring or should it be completely loose with no resistance at all ?. This one is adjustable, but to me the shaft it's not engaged properly on spring coil. Will check latter and report back.
