a little water in the outdrive....over winter

I just pulled my boat out of the building for the spring, and I left the drive up about half way. When I lowered the drive down all the way, about 3 seconds worth of water came out of my low water intake holes, just a small amount. How much clearance does the outdrive have in the water intake system? The boat sat out in the rain for a day after it was winterized, the prop and everything spins freely by hand, with no sounds. Thanks

I had an OMC mechanic tell me that when I winterize, to disconnect the coil and crank the starter for a few revolutions with the outdrive down. He said there can be water trapped in the water pump, and that would clear it.

When I do it, something like a quart or more of water always comes out, even though the boat hasn't seen water in weeks and the outdrive has already been lowered to top off the oil.

Perhaps the Merc has a similar quirk?
