Went with another guy in a shop which has been here a long time. Took a pic of all the old outboards he has hanging on the wall

He's an amateur. Looks like no more than 20 or so. And only 1 or 2 meet true collector status...:)

I'm impressed. Most people have just hammers at that height on the peg board. Thanks for sharing.

I had the pleasure of meeting a long term AOMCI member, Sal about year ago. His basement was STUFFED w/ little use and NEVER seen water OB's:

Sadly I wasn't able to go back before he passed away unexpectedly.

I saw more then 300 motors that day, and he has twice as many at each of his other 2 houses........

I like to use Sal as my reference point when the Admiral says I've got too much boat junk :)

While I like seeing those engines, it seem unfair that they will never be used like they were built for... Sad that their days are for nothing but hanging around... JMHO!

Agreed, but the reality is that if Sal didnt have them, many of them would likely have been scrapped, or be sitting outside w the cowls off, powerheads laying in the dirt behind a shed.

Seems many cast off the old rather then fix, repair or use old stuff, boats or motors.

And as people like Sal pass, we lose a great wealth of knowledge.

Agree. there is a place in Fox Lake Illinois called Dicks Marine. This guy has been in the same location sense 1965. Just visited him the other day and he's not getting around very well anymore.

Is the guy with the OB's over the bench an amateur, a serious or realistic collector? rolleyes: It doesn't matter. True collector status is determined by the fella shelling out the dough.

He who dies with the most toys wins.............and is still dead.

Come on guys I never said he was a collector:noidea: , but this is the most old motors I've seen in one place. I do no better now, honest :yield:

Agree with your post GA, but I like the one of "He who dies with the most worn out toys wins" yes he's still dead, but he had a good time until then :whoo:

My neighbor died and his wife put his 1950's something Johnson 4HP by the side of the road as trash.....guess what, it's in my basement now and will remain until I can find a new owner/collector/whatever for it....it's a free motor for anyone who'll provide a new home!....it's also a very pretty green outboard!....

AllDodge, most of us are aware of what you meant AND appreciate the effort to share it w us.

All of the Mods that have commented here, and probably most of those who haven't, are in that ^^^ group that appreciate it.

You have nothing to raise a white flag for, trust me.

Me and my stuff will most definitely expire mostly, if not completely, worn out. :rip: ;)

Thanks again

Old outboards are like potato chips....you can't have just one. There is some impressive old iron in those pix, including an old italian-built Bundy 40hp outboard from the early sixties, very cool. plus (OMC built) Vikings (Canada), Scotts, Firestones and even a Husquivarna (!).

I think its a safe bet that most of that stuff, especially the old OMC motors would run without too much coaxing. I picked up a cherry 1973 25 Johnson in 2001 that spent its life in a clothes closet after 1974. The elderly couple who had it passed away, the house was sold and the young couple who bought the house found it and put out with the trash, not really knowing what it was or what it was worth. It came home with me, I still have it and it looks and runs like new. I bought a NOS Johnson dealer display stand for it and now its a decorative piece at the beach house.

Gotta warn you though, messing with old outboards is an easy habit (good or bad) to get into.

Guys please don't take my comment as anything but caring. I love folks that collect things. But I love even better to see the older things running as they were built for... That's all. I also realize that yes most of them would probably be destroyed if he didn't collect them. But sad to know they will probably never ever be used again...ever... JMHO!

AD - I was trying to say that collections take many forms and sizes. The shop does have a collection on the wall. They may be motors he's owned over the years or some he found interesting. It makes a good for advertising since he's in the business. I think it's neat.

The late Sal is over the top, but that Firestone with the fins in the last two pics - I could see it on the back of a finned boat from the Fifties.

It seems some replies to the thread have noses in the air. I didn't want to quote any post.

No Title

I've been running this 1950 Mercury KF7, 10hp a bit this summer. I built it from two parts motors this spring. I try to get 2 or 3 motors out every year that haven't been run in awhile.

The little Blue Gale/Johnson/SeaBee with the goodyear decal on the front looks identical to the motor hanging on the little tin barge that dad just drug down to florida for us to fish in.
