a miss while idling...

1987 Yamaha ProV 150 had developed a miss at idle speeds and it has gotten worse to the point where when it misses it dies out about half the time. Speed the RPMs up just a bit and the miss is gone. Only there at slowest idle speed. I have changed the plugs and this didn't really help. Any ideas what could be causing this? Can you change plug wires like you can on a car? Do they just pop out of the little black box thingy (technical term alert!--assuming this is a coil of some sort) they come from. I tried and they didn't just pop off and I didn't want to mess anythign up by pulling too hard. The wires all look good from the outside. Is it possible one of the coils(?) is bad? How do you determine which one if this is the case?

would a bad coil be bad only at idle?

Reset the idle air screws at 1 1/4 turns from a soft stop to see if this helps. Also check to see if the idle timing screw has vibrated out of proper position.

Where are these screws located? How can I tell if he idle timing screw is in the correct position? Do these vibrate loose frequently. I have had the boat 7 years and no problems at all until about 6 months ago. Would making these adjustments fix the problem or just cover it up by causing the engine to idle faster?

Are you sure a cylinder is missing at idle and not just a rough idle or a "sneeze" of some sort.

What kind of maintenance has been performed on the carbs the 7 years you have owned the engine?

It is definitely a miss. There really hasn't been any maintenance done to it. It has been used frequently, only sitting more than a month once or twice. Sta-bil goes in the gas when it sits more than a couple of weeks, but that is about it.

could be, could be a bad fuel pump, could be bad recirc valves, could be a bad cyl seal. first order of business is to buy a factory manual, second is a spark and compression test.
usually if one carb is dirty the others are too.
