A more reliable fuel gauge

Although I always fill the tank up for most journeys, I do not find the fuel gauge very reliable. I always trust my knowledge of the boat instead and extra gas on board just in case. Is there a known device out there for better reading of the fuel levels and not dependant on whether or not you are travelling to make the gauge go up or down.

Re: A more reliable fuel gauge

Fuel Flow is bout the only thing that works ;)

The boat is almost never level and with wave action the fuel is allways moving all over the place

And with most tank shapes the volume changes to much as the level goes down

Lowrance does sell a tank sender with a 5 point calibration that makes a A/d converison so it can be seen in there GPS and flow units

1. Empty

2. 1/4

3. 1/2

4. 3/4

5. Full

Re: A more reliable fuel gauge

Navman/Northstar has a neat fuel flow monitor. I installed one because my fuel tank is long, wide, and shallow so the fuel gauge bounced around and I never knew how much fuel I had except when full. A fuel flow monitor tells you fuel burn rate (updated every 15 seconds or so), gallons remaining, fuel used per trip, fuel used total. You tell it how many gallons you put in or tank total if you filled it. The monitor takes it from there. The real advantage is it instantly tells you the sweet spot (gallons/hour) for the current load and conditions.
