A New Project Debate

A few years ago I aquired a Rienell cruiser about 25 foot. Motor and outdrive completely wasted. Interior is wasted as well. About the only thing good is the hull. A friend of mine thought we could just strip this out and fix it up as an ugly utility boat just to fish out of. As I got into more depth in the tear out of stuff, I found this thing is going to be a financial nightmare to do on not much of a budget. Steering, shifting, instruments, gimbal, and many other things unusable.

About the only thing that was good was the trim motor/pump. I did use that on my Cub Cadet to power my hydraulics on my snow plow.

My dear wife asked what I was going to do now since I gave up on hope of getting this boat going. Told her that I don't know, but I need to do something with it. Then she tells me why don't WE fix it up into a camper. HUH?

The more I thought about it and we talked, I'm sorta leaning towards her idea. She proposes that I cut our the stern and install a door with folding steps that swing up when towing. Put a cavas cover on the open part of the rear deck and fix up the inside like a camper would be. The floor needs to be replaced, but not being used as a boat, it wouldn't need glassed in. Where the engine and gas tank would be could be replaced with fresh water and waste tanks.

As for the boat to trailer, the boat could be lowered and mounted pemanently to the trailer.

I know this idea is different, but it could be a way of utilizing a large boat in a different way.

I'm not docking my boat this year due to the suspension of my operators license. That really bums me out. So I would have plenty of time to do this project this summer.

What is your thoughts on this (besides my wife and I are a bit crazy :D )....Thanks...SS

Turn it into a swimming pool or what I have seen done is a playhouse.

I saw a property where a 25' cabin cruiser was turned into a kids playhouse complete with a dock! It had a slide mounter off the side and the boat appeared peacefully docked in this guys yard. I know you have dam near a platoon full of grandchildren to play there!

This is one of the reasons my wife brought this idea up. No doubt there is not enough room to keep many onboard with us on the weekends. Since many of them(grandkids) usually roam the campgrounds, we figured that having it parked on a campsite would help expand some sleeping areas for them and their parents. Plus we would be able to have a campfire. That is one of the things we miss being docked on the boat.

what a cool idea...I wish I had thought or heard of it when my kids were young....I have seen playground "ships " built with pressure treated lumber..but this is most assuredly a 'greener' approach ...no trees sacrificed, and no Fiberglass hull ending up in a landfill.....the pool idea is a good one as well...I could see the filter and pump mounted on the stern...with the right enclosure to look like an outboard engine....the lower unit portion to hide the plumbing to the 'thru the hull fittings'....hmm,... maybe even a good hot tub application in this idea ;)

Camper- 1000 pounds +-
25 foot reinnell 4500 pounds +-
I would opt for the truck mounted camper and turn the hull into a jungle gym for the kids.
Just a thought :)

Re: A New Project Debate

It has been a dream of mine to have a decent 30' to 40' cruiser type hull, that sleeps 6-8 people,no engine,no fuel cost ,to keep in a marina slip , basically a camper that is on the water...nothing like sleeping on the water...and keep my 20' to run around the bay with ....it would make a nice 'down the shore' place to stay...the Atlantic ocean is an hour and a half away from me and I hate having to spend $$ on motel rooms to spend a weekend at the shore...

With all the marine stuff stripped out, it should maybe weigh from 1500 to 2K. I pulled it with my truck with all the stuff on it. It pulled great. Better than my 27'er. I wouldn't be pulling to far anyway since the lake we go to is about a 15 minuet drive.
