Thanks to the 4 who replied to my question/musings yesterday :)
My main wondering was what happens if you use less or more 2-stroke outboard-engine oil in the gasoline - I was just curious, but now get the general idea just to use 1:50 as Evinrude tells.... this is a 20hp 2-stroke from 1997.

Here's with the fuel: yesterday I drove from Sipoo to Helsinki again but deliberately slowly, it took 1hr50mins as opposed to about 1hr15mins last Saturday; then this trip had taken 11 litres of fuel. Yesterday it took 11.5. I do realize the longer an engine runs the more fuel it will use anyway (simply because of the time/engine having to tick over - 'idle'), but I had hoped a slow steady drive would show some fuel-saving (I drive buses for Helsinki City Transport and have been on fuel-saving courses)......
.....I re-measured the distance and it's about 25km, not 20 as I had originally estimated. This means that 'Xcuseme' (why? what have you done??!!) and 'phatmanmike' are correct in saying it should use 7.5 litres/hour - that's 44 litres per 100km.
So, now I have a very good idea what the situation is/should be, and can estimate distances & fuel needed for future trips (and to start arranging a loan at the bank in order to buy some fuel!!!).
I do know about saving fuel by not having the engine "full-throttle", but I can't see otherwise how to save fuel - the sea is bumpy and that's that :) By the way, this boat is an American "Galaxy" (spelt right?) fibre-glass from the 1970s, just an open boat 4.9m long - not a luxury yacht but I reckon we can have more fun with this, we can cross shallow water (and if it's very shallow, engine up and use the oars!). A slight disadvantage is that there's not much room for glamourous girls to lounge about drinking cocktails in their bikinis...

So, thanks for your replies. Isn't is funny that you can put up a question here and straight away get 3 answers from the USA & 1 from Denmark! If anyone's thinking of a trip to Finland, maybe I can give some advice?! (yes, use more oil, we have mosquitoes!!!)

Ross T.

In the interest of conserving your limited space, the bikinis could be left at the dock. :)

Charles

the use of synthetic oils is a option as they usually provide smoother running surfaces inside the motor thus making it more eficient. i use them in all of my products and i have noticed the smoother running.

another option is to thouroughly review the setup on your boat now. what type and size do you have, maybe shift some weight around, play with th trim a lil bit....

there are a few ways to get more fuel effiency...

prop, trim, weight, and driver actions are the big ones, play with these and let us know what happens

m ikey
