Based in the Illinois/Wisconsin state line area. Looking for interesting places to boat?once I finally close a deal on a boat.

I look at street guide maps like mapquest or google and you see water everywhere. But of course that doesn?t tell you anything about your ability to boat there.

What?s the best source of navigable waterway info? Marine Charts? GPS? Some old guy with a fishing rod in his hands and a bunch of stories to tell?

Most important to me is water depth and obstructions, such as dams. My stretch of the Rock River is fairly limited, only going a dozen miles between dams.

Once I get my sea legs, I?d like to go somewhere more substantial but no more than a half hour or so away.

Any suggested online sites that would have this kind of info?

Ah reading comprehension owns me, anyway I guess I would recommend lake Koshkonong, it is a shallow lake on the Rock River zone.
1/2 hour ? Maybe. 10,460 acre lake.

I don't know about your area but in michigan there are topographical maps of most popular lakes by county on our DNR website free to download and print.
Check your state government website.

My section of the Rock River runs through Rockford, Machesney Park, South Beloit.

Nice area!! I know it well, used to live in Rockford and Byron, used to tube starting in Rockford and float down to Byron 10 mi. down river, could also tube from Byron down to Oregon too and have a couple of beers there.
