A Polyester resin additive question

:confused Hi,

I know that epoxy is stronger but I don't have any and, as I have lots of polyester and MEP, I would like to use it. My project is bonding the bottom side of a new deck to the stringers then using screws to enhance the bond.

I know there are poly proponents on the board and I hope some of them chime in with their opinions.

Can someone who has done some bonding with polyester resin please explain the purpose of milled glass fibers being added to the resin/catalyst mixture?

Is the bonding more effective by doing so?

To prevent dripping and making a thicker mixture, I am considering adding cabosil but am wondering if doing so would cause the mixture to become brittle and prone to cracking?

Thanks for any help.

Re: A Polyester resin additive question

While Polyester isn't the best product for bonding, it will work for what you want to do and is how it was done when it was built. Add both cabosil and milled fibers for the best results, just use more fibers than cabosil. Cabosil does not make polyester brittle, it's brittle on it's own (depending on the type).
