I have a 1980 chris craft with a 350 v8 and a mercrusier #1 drive serial # 5472646, and was wondering if this drive has exhaust shutters, and if so, where are they? this drive does not have exhaust bellows, but rather a smooth rubber tube that just fits into the drive when it is down...haven't had any trouble with it but just trying to head off any .........thanks.

Re: a question about exhaust shutters

For what it's worth I have a 1978 Merc/260 hp with what sounds like the same thing , it has a smooth rubber hose on the engine side and nothing on the drive side wich it only goes into when the drive is all the way down, anyway I have had no problems but have been told if I really want to you can buy an aftermarket exhaust bellow hose which would replace the one sided one, hence forth connecting the exaust to the drive. hope this helps. John

Thanks John, I have heard about connecting it to the outdrive, but why? mine is not too noisy and I think it is much less back pressure on the engine, which in most cases is good........Why do the later mercs all have exhaust bellows?

Re: a question about exhaust shutters

A little info for both you guys....the smooth rubber tube that takes the place of the 'normal' accordion pleated bellows is a stock piece, generally used on engines above 200 hp, because they will flow more air than a solid bellows [hence more hp] provided there is some positive trim on the drive at planing speeds...also will make more noise, too.......the exhaust flappers you are looking for are in the exhaust pipes INSIDE the boat...log manifolds, at the base of the Y pipe...center riser exhaust, at the top of the Y pipe.....

Thanks Oddd1, I have the log style manifolds, how can you inspect the shutter if it is down in the fork of the Y? that whole pipe looks like one piece....would it be just inside the rubber tube?

Re: a question about exhaust shutters

Such a funny question! is never the 'easy' way for the likes of us...there is no inspection with log manifolds...remove the motor, change the flapper, put motor back in.....you got 2 choices, do it or dont.

Re: a question about exhaust shutters

guess I should have asked this question when I had the engine out the first time..... oh well, hind sight is 20 20 ..............maybe the best bet now, is to run thru-hull exhaust.

Re: a question about exhaust shutters

I hate to jump in on someone else's post, but I have through hull exhausts and rubber flappers on them. Would I also have flappers somewhere else in the exhaust system? I have a '69 26ft Stamus that was converted from I/O to Inboard with a generic marine Chevy 350. I will be replacing this in the future and was curious for future reference. <br />Thanks, Vince

wallbanger2, if i put tru-hull exhaust, it will exit about 18" above the water line .........
