1983 70 hp johnson got it running on the stand, put on my alumicraft boat. I go to hook up the wires and when I touch the solenoid theres a dead short. So i try jumping it on the starter side, its fine. Take the main red wire off the solenoid and that is where the short is. I unpug the big red plug, thinking when I installed the controlls maybe I grounded them out or something. Samething, still shorting out. So here I am really dumbfounded, and confused as I cannot understand whats going on.

Are you sure that the solenoid is marine?

You should have only three wires running to the incoming large post on the solenoid: the positive battery cable, the fused 20 amp line to the helm, and the red wire leading to the terminal block for the rectifier.

If the rectifier is bad, it is possible for it to short if the diode wiring fuses within the potting.

Thanks ezeke, Your the man, following your advice, I unscrewed the rectifier red wire from the treminal block and that is where the short is. When I put a hot wire to the red rectifier wire there is a dead short. I think I got a rectifier of a 1975 -70 evinrude going out to see if it will work. Once again thanks alot.
